STREAM GAUGES

Scenic Consulting Group worked closely with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to plan and execute the installation of new stream gages at priority locations identified by the NCDOT Hydraulics Unit in order to forecast storm event flooding through direct water level gage reporting and by providing historical storm event water level data to facilitate flood modeling.  The stream gages will be integrated to report water level data to the North Carolina Emergency Management’s NC Contrails and Flood Inundation Mapping and Alert Network (FIMAN) systems.

Scenic Consulting Group developed an installation team which designed, fabricated, assembled, and installed new stream gage equipment and structural mounts for each gage site.  Following the installation, the gage equipment and structural mount was professionally surveyed to provide critical elevations on highway locations which are subject to flooding and closure.  These elevations will allow new gage data to be compared to low points on highways and provide potential road closure forecasts.

Scenic Consulting Group Engineers provided stream gage installation assessments 34 potential gage sites located in the Lumber River, Cape Fear River, and Neuse River Basins at crossings with NCDOT structures.  Site were identified as priorities as a result of major flooding impacts during Hurricanes Michael and Florence.  Scenic Consulting Group assessment will include: assess historical flooding and impacts at each site, determining the best gage sensor type for each site, determine the preferred gage site location based on the structural mounting point, ability to remain clear of waterborne debris, sun and cellular exposure, potential impacts from maintenance operations and the public, and ability to maintain and safely service the gage equipment in the future. Site assessments include photographs and diagrams of the structure with the recommended gage installation location. Scenic Consulting Group will provide cost estimates and scheduling information for NCDOT.
